$28m ‘waterless barrier’ aims to keep cane toads out of the Pilbara
A $28 million project will try to stop cane toads reaching WA’s Pilbara by cutting off their water across 7,500 square kilometres south of Broome. Dams and tanks on six pastoral stations will be modified so toads can’t drink. The toad front is about 100km from Broome. Rio Tinto, Curtin University and Karajarri Traditional Owners are partners, with works starting in 2027.
